Plush Ponies & "Hot" Hats
We're hunkering down here at the office as we enter the home stretch of our August magazine deadline. If you spend any time reading Juli Thorson's Horse Talk blog (and you should!), you know in the magazine world we seldom get to live in the present. My mind is always on a 2-3 month fastforward (which can be a problem when I'm dating personal checks at the grocery store -- "Ummm, ma'am it's June, not August").
Despite my mad dash to make it to the office a little early this morning so I could make a dent in the last of my August assignments, I found time, as always, to grab a bite to eat (of course!) and make my bed (yes, I'm one of those people who always makes their bed -- Mom must be proud). The last step in my bed-making process is aligning my three stuffed animals neatly across the bed. YES, I said it, stuffed animals. Am I the only woman over the age of 9 who still has a soft spot for them? I have my stuffed dog whom I've slept with since I was 8, a Winnie the Pooh my childhood best friend gave me, and one newcomer -- a plush pony I purchased at the Quarter Horse World Show.

Alana and I were there to snap some pictures, support some Team H&R members (including Charlie Cole and Bob Avila), and chat it up with the exhibitor and spectators (If you ever see us at an event, STOP us and say hello!). While taking a break to peruse the booths, this little guy caught my eye. I debated over him for quite a while, pondered how much Alana would make fun of me, and finally had to splurge on the chubbster. Alana ended up having little ammunition against me. I caught her seriously considering this peppery get-up.
So, I'm wondering a couple things. First, am I the only "grown-up" who still has a soft spot for stuffed-animal ponies? Second, what are some of y'all's favorite horse-show splurges? Labels: horse show, picture

Thanks for the blog boost, Erin, and also for the good laughs over your post.
I'm also feeling busted on the bed-making subject, because I am one of those people who DON'T usually make the thing up in the morning.
That's because there's still someone in it (hubby dearest) at the hour I get up and hit the keyboard to keep up with you two-hours-later Texans!
Hey--I thought I was the only grown-up who put plush toys on the bed. Guess not, so I won't feel like the Lone Ranger.
Actually, I had to stop this practice when my little dog, a Pomchi (Pomeranian/Chihuahua cross...sort of looks like a plush toy herself) decided these toys had been placed on the bed for her delectation (read: mutilation).
So for now my bed is toy-less. But definitely been there, done that. Thanks, Erin, for a delightful diversion
I not only have a few stuffed animals on the usually-unmade bed, but I have one big one on the DOG bed--a life-sized stuffed husky. The two real huskies cuddle happily with their stuffed littermate, with Evan often snoozing while drapped over "Blizzy's" back.
You mentioned horse show splurges, too--OMG, I've sure been tempted by countless things! I still regularly use a treasured heavy 2-ear headstall I bought at AQHA World in 1998. One particularly dangerous temptation are the plentiful puppies! If anyone shows up with husky or klee kai puppies at a show, I don't think I'll be able to resist taking one (or a whole team) home! Hmmm... maybe THAT's why I bought a bigger truck... LOL!
my biggest horse show splurge is riding pants and Breyer horses I love Breyer's and I get made fun of it all the time, but it's like excuse me anything horse is PERFECT in my opinion whether it be a real one or a stuffed or plastic one, and who can deny the beauty the Breyer horses posess??
I don't usually make my bed either... I did when it was just a single in college, but the king bed is toooo big (cue pathetic voice)! Same with the stuffed animals--used to have a big white bear I slept with at my parents' house named Twigbee (because it was from the dept store Higbee's). And like Jenny, our greyhound thinks every plush toy is his!
Love that pic of Alana--her hat looks like it could be a chip and salsa tray, too. Multi-purpose!
I make my bed everyday and I sleep with stuffies too! I have a plush Eeyore and a Squirrel I sleep with
:o)
Well, I have stuffed horses all over my office. It is very apparent that I am a cowgirl. I can't pass up an any little fuzzy cuties that I see.
My biggest buy at horse shows are always BOOTS! BOOTS! BOOTS! If I come home with just one new pair, I feel let down.
I never used to make my bed, but I'm now reformed. I like the look of the whole room later in the day with the neat bed and smooth coverlet, and my stuffed prince frog.......he wears a gold crown and has a purple cape, he does have a detached leg (he was over loved by a small child), I should sew it on, but instead I just tuck it under him....I love my frog.
Lack of funds means no horse show purchases for many years but I still browse...... maybe I should kiss the frog for financial help?
There is nothing wrong with a modest collection of stuffies. Its when there's a whole gang of them that it might get strange! lol
And I will confess that I am a bed maker. Mostly because I really do NOT like to get into an un-made bed when I go to sleep.
That little chubby pony is too cute! No stuffies on the bed - although, does a big tabby cat count? lol
I have a couple of real stuffies - a little tigger and a horse beanie baby on my dresser. I also have a little horse on my desk at work...
No big horse show purchases here - we don't have big shows like the AQHA worlds nearby. All of the shows here just have stuff from the local tack shop, that I can buy at anytime, so I usually resist.
I really wish I'd bought that chili-pepper visor. Would have come in handy over Memorial Day weekend. My husband and I through a little shin-dig and had to server queso out of a plastic bowl. (It was humiliating.)
First of all, April, your pooches obviously beat all of ours hands down in the "coexisting with stuffed animals" department :)
I'm feeling some definite group therapy by reading that I'm not alone in the plush-love. This is some good ammunition to use against my fiance when we move in together after our wedding in Sept. and he wants to say "bye bye" to my little friends.
Cowgirl Rae, if kissing the frog works, I might have to ask you send to me on loan for a while ;)
I never make my bed. Like Jenny, I can't have stuffed animals because my dogs and cats assume that all plush toys are there for their chewing pleasure.
No stuffed animals on my bed--wait my 3 cats sleep with me and two of them are definitely "stuffed", or would like to be (with their propensity to gain weight I have to carefully monitor their food intake).
I do,however, have stuffed horses on the couch, and on top of two bookcases. And a stuffed coyote puppet on another bookcase.
I do make my bed every morning.
I don't go to horse shows so no spurge shopping there.

Erin.... don't let new hubby swipe the bed of your ponies.... My Dh thinks the frog is OK.... not to mention his very own 12 inch stuffy Tweety Bird, and the purple plush bunny he won at a casino, he keeps it because he says it has "cute eyes" ..... did I say it was purple?
I'll kiss the frog on your behalf..... money is on the way!
