Smitty Gets His Registered Name, and So Forth

Smitty's ApHC papers came in the mail over the weekend, and he is now on the books (in the computer, I guess I should say) as Dakota Smith. I've had that name saved for a horse for quite a while, and Smitty is a good one to have it (with Dakota Smiths, my brother and sister-in-law, as his breeders and all).
We had a spectacular sunny Sunday, perfect for some literal "in the field" training sessions. Smitty and I used part of the yard and garden for some in-hand obstacle practice, and then we went for a very productive "obedience walk" out on the unfenced back side of the ranch. (This is where you really find out if that "whoa" you've been worked on is, indeed, in place.)
After a little hand-grazing time, we moved on to some practice at trailer-loading. Smitty has this down pat--in fact, he's as eager to get in the trailer as the dogs are to get in the truck. We went in and out several times and each time, he hopped in as eagerly as old-pro Tank used to do.
Maybe I should have named him Road Pony!
Data note: Smitty is 7 months old today. He is 13.1 hands tall, 650 lbs., and about to grow out of a size 64 blanket. In the 2 months he's been here, he's grown an inch and added almost 100 lbs.
He went up a halter size, from weanling to yearling. He's met the vet, for shots, and the farrier, hoofstand and all. He ties, and he stands nicely to be clipped.
His next big lesson will consist of learning to pony alongside another horse.
Here is yet another time when I think of and miss good old Tank. He was just the best for ponying babies, and for helping to bring them up in general.

He sure is a sharp looking boy!!!
I love this time of year as the weanlings begin to look like yearlings and the yearlings begin to look like two year olds.
Wow! He's really coming along and looking so good!
Wow that is one big baby! Seems like some days you could swear they grew an inch overnight. Your obedience walk brings back happy memories of yearling training days with my own Dakota App. It was during that time that I realized how much I enjoyed working with the babies, and hope to pursue it more in the future. Robin Gollehon has my dream job! You are already so ahead of the game with this head-turner. The time spent on the ground pays such tremendous dividends under saddle.
Awe, mommy's baby is growing up!
Love the name, so befitting a beautiful horse...
Cool -- love that you are exposing him to everything at an early age! Have fun!
Ah, and with the white showing around his eye, he gives a hint of the first ride that is going to be an Event. Who gets the honor?
Smitty is an Appaloosa. The white around his eye shows at all times--just like a human's does.
I thought you were going with Wordsmith as a registered name. Was that name taken? I do like Dakota Smith, too. :-)
Wordsmith ended up being my No. 2 choice, and it was available at the time.
Just couldn't miss the perfect opportunity to use Dakota Smith!
Hey Smitty! You're lookin' "bad" dude! Love the new moniker, it fits you like a glove! Gotta watch walkin' around the big outdoors. Mom and I were going through the woods on our regular walk and we both fell into a big hole.Turns out the flooding in Aug made the ground sink in spots and we stepped right into it. Mom and I have some bumps and scrapes but she said she was proud of me for not freakin' out. I thought I fell on her (no) but we were good. DS I'm keepin' an eye on you! Mom says when I turn 4 we are coming West so I hope I get to meet you. Have fun workin' with your mom. Neigh, Paha.
I love hearing about what you're working on with Smitty. I too recently got a weanling (haven't worked with a weanling in eleven years) so would love ideas of what to work on. He knows how to tie, lead, trailer, whoa, pick up feet, stand for grooming and blanketing, etc. For now we've just been getting him settled in and get him over his respiratory infection. He's learning the routine and doing really well. I'll be keeping track of Smitty's progress. :)

Dakota Smith sounds like a movie star! He's a nice colt! And isn't it fun having a baby around the place?
