You Know It's the End of an Era When...

....the Roy Rogers Museum announces it is closing its doors.

Citing a faltering economy, high expenses, and the aging of Roy's longtime fans, Dustin, grandson of the late singing cowboy, confirms that the museum will shut down at the end of this year.

Contents of the museum will either be sold or placed privately.

I know I can't be the only horse lover of a certain age to be saddened by this news of a passing era.

I named my first pony after Buttermilk, the horse ridden by Roy's wife Dale. And how many of us still hold up Trigger as THE iconic horse we wish were ours?

(Cue the opening bars to "Happy Trails to You"....until we meet again.)

Oh Juli I so much hate to hear this. It really is the ending of an era.

My husband and I have a guilty pleasure listening to a couple of old cowboy song CDs and Roy and Dale are among our favorites.

So much history will be dispersed. Sad to see.

Awww... I loved Trigger! When my filly reared up and dumped my best friend (who thought he was a pretty good cowboy before that) we all said they looked like Roy Rogers!

NOOOOOOO:( Gosh I grew up watching all the westerns and horse related shows I could, Bonanza, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Flicka, and some I just can't bring to mind at the moment. Gene Autry, Black Beauty, heavy sigh, sad.
What cowboy icons will kids these days have? Unless it's a video game, or computer game, many of todays kids may grow up to have kids who never have been outside, ever. Wouldn't know a blade of green grass or blue sky if it bit them on the, you know. Too sad.

oh no, how sad.
I too can remember all those wonderful shows and the good values they set for us.
I am so saddened to hear about the closure of our childhood icons,
Roy & Dale.
I loved the "Good guys in white vs the Bad guys in black...how the cowboys respected the fair ladies and how they respected their loyal horses.
I guess it truly is time to 'ride off into the sunset' with our memories....All I can say is, Thank you, Roy, Gene, Alan, Little Joe and all the other great cowboys for giving us such wonderful memories.
Happy Trails to you.

How sad! We still watch them on cable when we can catch them. I think it is so sad that the kids now just don't want anything to do that does not beep or flash or do things we don't understand. All our old heros taught us not to lie, to have manners, and be respectful and how to love an animal. One more was the Cisco Kid and was it Poncho with him? Kids now do not want to go outside and just play - what a loss.

I just remembered I still have my first pair of Roy Rogers Boots! The toys are worn through one layer but they have Roy Rogers on the side. I was so proud!

Makes me really sad to hear this....if they just "have" to close the museum I hope they can keep the contents "together" and not disperse them to the winds.......

I have a lifelong love of buttermilk buckskin horses from this shoe. My first horse (a Peruvian Paso) at age 52 is this color!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!
What will happen to Trigger and Bullet? Aren't they stuffed and in the museum? Hate to think of them just out there...somewhere...

Please, tell me NO...this is so sad!

The times, they are, indeed, changing.

Went to a recent AQHA show where the Select (read:
'Boomer') exhibitors out-numbered the regular Amateurs.

I remember you predicting this a few years ago.

It's happening!
