Off Topic: Enjoying the Last Days Before Full, Hard Frost
Up in north Idaho, where I live, the trees are just starting to turn to their autumn colors and the asters, last flowers of the year, are in their contrasting glory. But it's all going to change soon, because I woke up this morning to the sight of frost at the bottom of the pasture (visible from the kitchen window).
Time is ticking now on the "get ready for winter" clock. And when I went to the barn to feed just now, little Smitty's spots were standing straight up!

We had a little frost here night before last. There were actually frost advisories for last night, but I don't think it hit very hard. We've got a new horse off the track who's extremely slick and his short little hairs are working overtime standing on end the last couple days. Piloerection (sp??), that's what that handy little feature is called that lets them fluff up their hair on end to hold in more body heat... Haven't seen him shivering yet, but they all sure have more energy when the temps fall down into what's actually their comfort zone! Yeah fall!
OOOH how I love the popped up spots! Yep our trees here in Michigan started turning, all my Summer birds headed South and the Marigolds and Mums/Asters look so, so bright against the fading green. The boys and myself are loving the cooler temps and am really itching to saddle up Meins and head out somewhere.
My tailbone is healing nicely so I, for once, will listen to the doc and wait until November to ride.
Today we are checking receding fenceline brush looking for deadfall or potential deadfall and making sure the water heater is ready and working, the heavy hose comes out, sigh, etc., etc.
We had hard frost last night and ice on the outside water buckets this morning. Gonna be a busy weekend.
No frost here yet- and the temps are still about 75 degrees - but there is a certain 'tang' in the air that says fall is just around the corner. Time to bring out the blankets!
That's not off-topic. We all have stuff to do to prepare our land and horses ready for winter, even if it's just getting out the tank heater. I'm grateful we're months away from that. And it doesn't last here. Even if we get bad cold and ice, it will be gone the next day.
Smitty is looking good!
We had a frost warning. I covered the tomatoes (have to save those) and the Hibiscus and left the rest. No frost. Now it is cold and raining like crazy. UGH We usually have a cold spell and miserable weather for Halloween and then it gets a little better. Husband just keeps counting off the days to go to AZ - me too.
WE actuallt had our first frost last night. Lows were in the mid 40's. Time is just moving too fast. (didn't we just get done with winter?) When I was brushing my POA gelding before our ride, I noticed that he is just starting to get a bit fuzzy. I am sure the mule and the filly will follow shortly.
