Off Topic: Thinking About Michael Jackson

By now, the entire planet knows that entertainer Michael Jackson died yesterday at age 50. That was the nature of his fame--worldwide.

I once nicknamed a horse after him--Jackson--because like Michael, my Jackson had a glove (a single white sock) on his left front.

This morning, I was reminiscing with Ed about seeing MJ's breakout young-adult performance, in which he debuted the moonwalk. The occasion was the Motown 25th anniversary TV special at the Apollo Theater in New York, in the early 1980s. Nobody had ever seen anything remotely like it, and it created a sensation.

At the time, I worked at a popular Northwest equine publication called The Lariat. We all came to work the next morning and spent most of it talking about what we'd seen on television the night before. It'd take another 20-some years before the YouTube phenomenon would make that performance readily available.

Here it is.

Juli: I am glad you posted this. Like you I grew up with MJ. I never liked rock (strictly a country fan) but I loved MJ and Elvis. They both had talent that may never be seen again. What fun it was to watch MJ grow up on the TV shows. When this video was made I think he looked his best. I know he kind of went off the deep end but would you want to walk in his or
Elvis's shoes? What would it be like to not do anything that normal people do? To never be able to just walk down the street, to have to rent the whole bowling alley so you could bowl? Then with MJ you had his father to add to the problem. I always wished I could see him in person and never will get the chance. His music and dancing will be missed.

Talent is a rare and wonderful thing and only happens so often no matter what it is for whether it is song, dance, acting or horses and i agree with the other comment , there will never be another Michael Jackson or Elvis and you have to admire the talent they had. May god bless Michael family.

It seems like the great ones go way before their time. It is sad that with Michael's extreme talent came extreme sadness and controversy. R.I.P. Michael and hopefully now you can be comfortable in your own skin.

Michael Jackson was on of the most gifted performers we will ever see. Ill advice and his niavety to the world as a whole was his downfall. His childhood lost to performing for us, his adulthood lost trying to find that child. God bless you Michael for the joy you gave us through your music and dance.

I too was a fan, and like others his was some of the only POP music I would listen to. I really think that we all lost something when MJ died, it not very often a musical genius comes along.
