A (Naked!) Episode from 'The Life of Riley'

Shot from my kitchen window this morning, this is a photo of four horses weathering a good rain by getting under a tree.

A pretty ordinary deal, right?

Yes, except not to the sorrel on the far left. That's my 6-year-old gelding, Riley. To him, getting out of the rain under a tree is a brand-new horse skill--taught to him courtesy of Corky and L.B., the two outfitter-string horses who know all about handling life outdoors.

Riley, you see, has been more of a barn boy until this summer. Not only that, but he's also been a barn boy clad in  clothes. He's either been actively showing, in training somewhere, or sheltered for the winter, and has the blanket/sheet/fly cover/turnout rug wardrobe to prove it.

This season, he's finally getting a chance to be more of a naked nature boy. For the sake of a well-rounded equi-education, better late than never!

For a second it almost looked like they were mooning you. Can't you just hear it? "Ok guys she's coming toward the window - all butts to the house on 3-2-1." LOL!

Stretch is also getting an outside horse education via my mom's old mare! He's taking to it rather quickly.

That IS an LOL.

I can just hear Riley coming up with that idea, too.

"Moon Mom!"

I too have started letting my horses be horses. For the first time ever, I did not blank my horses this winter and you known what? they did just fine. Also I have been letting my horses stay outside in 98 degree weather. Does this make me a bad horse mom, i do not think so. My horses are doing just fine and making my life much simpler.

Just put up a run in shelter for my retired show horses. No more stalling at night which will make my stall cleaner (hubby) happy.

I'm lucky that we have varied terrain, including cool, shady spots and big cedar trees where they can get out of the weather. They have a run-in shed, but don't use it. I don't have a barn and can't compare behavior, but I know my guys are pretty darned relaxed and laid back. They do appreciate a blanket when the wind is whipping across the plains.
