Inviting You to Play 'Horse Weekend Update'

OK, blogophiles, it's Monday morning, and some of you must have some good stories about the horse stuff you did with your weekend.

So, let's hear the details. Show? Clinic? Barrel race? Trail ride? Roping? Something else that was fun and a break from routine?

If I had a picture of a water cooler, I'd put one here just to get you in the mood to chat up the rest of us!

Saturday night, I treated my city-boy husband to his very first PRCA rodeo. He really got into it! He didn't know "rodeos were DJ'ed"--LOL! He said his favorite event was saddlebronc riding, and he loved the mutton busting, too. We shopped for small tractors and enjoyed buffalo burgers on the midway. It was fun!

Oddly, I caught his eyes occasionally straying to the huge trucks and trailers in the parking lot beyond the arena. I think he was taking a mental count of the percentages of short boxes to long boxes. Guess what? Short boxes were more plentiful than long ones by almost 2-1! I wouldn't have guessed that, especially with those longer trailers.

I had an open show planned for Sunday--a local, low-key event. I'm glad I decided to skip it first thing in the morning, as all of my afternoon classes would have been interrupted with tornadoes! It wouldn't have been the first time--that happened to me once in Genesee in 1997. I'm so glad I didn't put myself in a position to repeat the experience!

Ok - I'll play along, since I have no one horsey to chat with at work!

Friday - spent a bit of time shopping online for a new western bridle (didn't find what I was looking for...shipping to Canada is too expensive!!!)

Saturday - fit in a ride in the arena. Working on that lope and transitions. I think I'm making some progress, but we have a ways to go yet

Sunday - went to support some kids from the barn at a local schooling show series. The western stuff is way more fun to watch than the English for me. Had fun helping a Mom with all of the horsey terms and trying to explain reining to Danish guests!

This moring I went to my local tack shop to look for bridles - and I found the exact one I was looking at online, but with no foregin currency or shipping charges! The shopping gods were on my side! :-) (sorry for the long post!)

I had a QH show this weekend, technically the fourth one of the year, but the other three were small one or two day shows. We ended up tying for Reserve High Point Novice Ammy for the weekend and snagged our first points by winning NA Showmanship and placing 2nd under the other judge. We added showmanship, horsemanship and trail at this show and did pretty well over all. Off to Raleigh this weekend for another one;)

THANK YOU!! Nobody in my family is interested in horses so I'll take every chance I get to talk about horses with horse lovers haha well Friday we went to the "big city" and got to stop by the World Ranch Rodeo and tradeshow. Watched some girls do some great stuff in the ranch horsemanship. Also did some saddle shopping since my 70 something year old saddle has almost bit the dust. I got home late and ran out to the barn to get my horse ready for his first show... Saturday I took a city-girl friend to her first playday, and I rode my horse in the western pleasure and horsemanship. I missed a maneuver in the horsemanship, so I go last in that, also got last in the pleasure. BTW, this was my first show ever and probably the first for my 16 year old ranch horse too. Oh well, it was still lots of fun except for the WIND! It was TERRIBLE!! The show officials waived the hat rule, it was that bad. Didn't ride yesterday because of the wind, but just finished riding my horse for about 3 hours. We're working on loping, pulling logs, and getting... "un-barn soured", among other things. Made huge progress! Oh and good news I've found myself a show coach, to help me out with my horse. That's a big blessing!! I have a good horse but we both need show training! Gotta go turn the money eating beasts out now...

This is the weekend I truly decided to sell my gelding. Sell him or shoot him, one or the other...
See we decided to go on a trail ride sat. Friends met us at the barn, everyone has their horse except my daughter, because her sweet mare is being bullied and herded to the far corner of the pasture by my husbands 10 yr old gelding and my 2 yr old. After 30 min of walking and swearing, I finally herded the whole group into a paddock, and we freed my daughter's mare from her bondage.
We already knew my boy liked to herd, he had been terrorizing all the neighborhood dogs, rolled barrels and balls, even tried to cut a fox, but this time he took it as a challenge to keep the mare cut away from me.
Since I ride English, and like to jump, it's time for me to give up and let him be a western cow horse.

After this we went on to a lovely ride and dinner at our local crab place.

Hi, Julie,

The Central NY Horse Club had a Saddle Up for St. Jude's Children's Hospital ride/poker run. We had 73 riders and raised just over $4,500.00 for St. Jude's! We have been holding this event for about 15 years and this was our best year EVER!

Friday night, my husband and I went to friends’ house. I rode and introduced my western pleasure horse to the cows, and my husband helped with the cook out. Great fun, food, and fellowship. Saturday, I went on a trail ride, just three of us. Had a great time. Sunday, after church, my husband and I went fishing. Had to go back to work to get some rest.

Sunday is the first day of my "weekend". Between a sick household and work yesterday was the first time I'd had the time for myself and the horses.
There was the promise of rain all day but it held off until I was done. I'm very happy to report that our gelding Raincloud was easy to catch for the first time in a few weeks. He just stood right where he was, no games.
My friend and I took the time to actually mark out our barrel pattern and set up the timers.
We hit the arena and after warming up ran a few barrels. Raincloud warmed up nicely, although he's still stiff at a lope travelling right. Gotta work on that.
His barrel patterns weren't super fast, but they were consistent. And better yet I think we've discovered what was causing him to bow out coming out of second... go figure, its me! lol

Friday: Since the a show I was planning to go to on Thursday was canceled, I worked my POA gelding. Mostly on his canter to jog transitions(got the canter to walk down, but seem to be having a bit more difficulty with the canter to trot.) He did pretty good. Just a bit more practice and he''l have them down. Other than that, it was a day like any other. (what am I saying. I live on a farm. There is no such thing as a normal day. Hehe!)
Saturday: Gave Junie(the POA) a day off, and later in the evening hopped on our old Morgan mare to school her bit since I'll be giving lessons on her. Did mostly corral work, but then to her up the trail. Had a good ride. Was nice just to ride and not have to worry about any show stuff. Also kind of nice to ride someone other than Junie-bug.

Inexplicably I chose to ride a four year old that hasn't had but two months training, and that was last summer. Since then she has done nothing but stand in the pasture and eat, so I expected the worst, wondering if I should call my insurance agent or 911 before I mounted.
Not to worry though as this little palomino totally amazed me. Not only did she remember all her basics, she did so with good humor and ears forward in the most agreeable fashion. And to think that this one was the one I was practically ready to give away last fall.
If this continues with no major wrecks for the entire summer, she may have bought herself another year's room and board.
Ok, she's never going to be an athlete and hasn't got a lot of 'git' but it would be nice I've decided to have a novice horse out here. Perhaps one even for me on the days when I don't want to go high, fast, or furious.
Actually -- maybe it's my age? --- I'm looking forward to moseying along on Little Pal this summer, both of us enjoying the sights and smelling the roses as we venture forth.
They don't all have to be champions, do they?

I'm recovering from my "rodeo injury,' so no riding for me. I visited Poco and Jaz and gave little Amber a bath.

My Boyz are coming home this weekend.

I went to the REgion 7 AQHA experience and I must say I was disappointed. They couldn't even fill a class on the day I was there ( Trail and Hunt SEat and Gymkhana). The people I saw winning were the same people from Ca. that I show against, and hardly no one from any other state except Ca was there. I guess I was disappointed in the turn out- I expected a bigger show, with more vendors and more AQHA presence in the form of booths and people. It was more like a very small schooling show.

I went to a Poker Ride on Sunday and enjoyed about 3 hours in the mountains and even got to take home a gift basket after drawing a straight. The weather was cloudy and cool, but no rain and I didn't see any horse wrecks. My 5 year old handled everything just fine and it was just a nice day, overall.

Enjoyed a weekend of horse camping & riding with friends at historical Rock Creek Station in south central Nebraska. As with all my trips, I blogged about it & shared some pictures:

I taught a lesson for two 15 year old girls in preparation for my Instructor's exam on the 13th. It's the second time I've given them this exact lesson plan; by now they should be able to identify leads at a lope!

I got about 5 minutes of riding time for myself but it's still better than nothing!
