Horse & Rider's Canine Editorial Team
As the production crew put the final touches on August's Horse & Rider last week, I reset my brain to editorial planning for September's issue and beyond. I was busy going over notes, making phone calls, and filling in calendar dates, when I felt a familiar "thump-thump-swish" of a dog tail wisking my foot. I looked down, and there was Deputy Squeeker, in position and on duty as one of Horse & Rider's canine members of the editorial team.
The whole lot of us are proof that Horse Person usually = Dog Person as well.
The On Staff at H&R bloggers, Erin and Alana, have dogs, Happy and Murphy, who spend work days under or next to their desks. Their Texas office mate, Art Director Adam Purvis, has four canine furkids in addition to little boys Atticus and Holden. Senior Editor Jenny Meyer, who has a home office in California, is owned by a bossy little PomChi named Sadie. The contributing editors have just as much dog hair in their rigs as those of us who serve on the full-time staff.
One thing you gotta love about dogs as editorial partners is that they never complain about the hours. They're ready to be on standby as long as you need their company.
I'm betting that most of you reading this post have your own canine partners to count on.
Do you?

And has anyone else noticed that dogs are just like kids in that the moment you're on the phone, that's the moment they'll start to bark, or need to go out, or whatever. Seems it never fails. Such is life with an "office dog."
You bet! My Jack Russell, Sammy is under the desk, My black Doberman, Aldo is right behind my chair and Anna my red Doberman is on the floor to my right. The moment I stop whatever it is I'm doing and sit down, gardening, reading mail, mowing or grooming my horses, there is always a dog nearby. Somtimes I accidently step on a paw and get annoyed because they have all this acreage to roam on....but I feel special because they chose to be with me. Thankfully the horses cannot get out of the pasture, they follow me too when doing chores! So mom makes sure she sits near the fence so everyone can be closeby just hangin' out.
Let's see...one aussie behind my chair and one next to my chair. The one closest is staying near because he ate too many mesquite beans (trees are dropping them like mad)and has a tummy ache. He's thrown up twice. Just part of being a dog mom :) I'm never quite sure about people that don't like dogs.
I have an Irish Wolfhound, who insists on lying next to wherever I am, and he takes up a lot of real estate! He always starts up curled up neatly, but will end up sprawled across the floor taking up all the room eventually.
HA HA I know what you mean about dogs taking up space. I ahve a great dane and he takes up as much space as any human would. At 160 pounds he really is a mini horse!!
Three Yorkies and one Border collie here. They all have different personalities. Tasha will never leave my side no matter where I am. If I work too long at my desk she informs me that enough is enough. Gidget is the type that does want to sit next to me but not too close and when out and about her nose is to the ground looking for something. Manny, typical male spends most of his time on his back sleeping and is a real lover. The Border Collie is totally obsessed with working the horses. She wants everyone out in the barn helping all the time. What would we ever do without them? They are better than kids because if they act up you can put them in a kennel. LOL
