Among the Mourners

This morning, there's a backhoe operator out in the pasture, digging the grave for Miss Rose--who was put down yesterday next to her final resting place.
The equine mourners, as well as the human ones, are giving witness and paying their respects.
Farewell, sweet little friend. We're all going to miss you.

Aww, that is so sad. I have a pic of the neighbors horse nuzzling his longtime mule companion. Mom wouldn't let me post it, as it showed the dead mule, but it was a sweet pic nonetheless and just shows how hard animals do grieve. I feel so bad for both you, Ed and the other horses. Such a loss is always so hard. Hugs to all of you
It is so hard to lose one.
I am sorry for your loss. I know how you must feel right now. I recently had to put my stallion down. It was a great sad loss. He was a great well mannered boy. I am still sad when i think about losing him even though 6 weeks have passed. I hope he is in the same place as Miss Rose.
They are so big, so stoic yet they need to rely on us for that final kindness. I can see her bolting through the gate with her tail cocked over her back. Thank you for sharing.

No words can express what it means to lose a friend.
When a horse dies, the whole world becomes a bit less beautiful.

Juli,
It's hard decision to have to make and I'm so very sorry to hear that you had to make it. Many of us have been in your shoes and it's not a nice place to be. Time will ease the pain but the emptyness will always be there. Take heart that you made the decision with nothing but love and devotion. You are a true horesman.
How lucky she was to have you.
And how lucky to have so many friends to attend her passing. I often think that it's sad that so many animals die without their friends nearby somewhere.
The last thing Miss Rose saw was her little herd of horse friends. She put her ears up when they spotted her back out in the pasture, and whinnied to her.
It was a pretty good ending for a horse, now that you mention it.
Juli..
Yes, it is so very hard to let them go. My "Prize" has been gone over a year now and barely a day goes by that I don't mourn her passing. We use to have a ritual of greeting each other by my blowing in her left nostril - I think it was her confirmation it was really me! Prize was an orphan from day 3 - we lost my absolute best show mare ever due to complications of her delivery (a whole other story). Unfortunately Prize developed contracted tendons and even after two major surgerys, months at the vet hospital and careful monitoring and farrier work, we ended up having to put her down. The blessing is that we were able to give her 5 years of love and vise versa. Tears swell up now still...thinking of my Prize Babe. But, I know she is now with her mom and I'm sure they are having a "hay day" in heaven. So take care, Juli. There will come a day when the tears will slow down and the fond memories will be happier then the sad good bye....I know:)
