Re-Ride: Taking the Reins (Again) at Horse&Rider

With the official press release having gone out today, I'm ready to share the word here about my having been named editor and associate publisher for Horse&Rider.

It is and isn't a new job for me...I was the magazine's editor in chief through the first half of the 1990s.

But considering life's ever-accelerating rate of change, that seems long ago and far away in many respects. (Hard to believe for some, I'm sure, but digital communication barely even existed, and cell phones were the size of a loaf of bread.) I'll have a new learning curve, no doubt.

Should still be an awesome ride, though.

Because for anyone with any inkling to do what it is I do, Horse&Rider is one awesome pony to get to be ridin' and guidin'!

Congratulations - I'm sure the magazine will continue it's successful path. This announcement goes hand in hand with the question I was going to ask you today. Did Lynn Palm write a series of articles for H&R in 1998 or so? I've been wracking my brain, surfing the net and rummaging through my old horse magazines, but I can't find my info. Thanks

Lynn Palm has written more than one series for Horse&Rider.

Do you recall anything about the specific subject matter?

Thanks for answering - This was a very basic series, stretched out over several months. It was eye opening for me at the time.It was colt starting, I think, there was lots of ground work, then basic collection, half pass, side pass that kind of thing.
I can't believe I'm getting this old and forgetful.
P.S. Loved the H&R hat I got in the mail...

H&R ran a series with Lynn Palm called "Longevity Training." It started in July 1997 and ran for about a year. It was later made into a book by the same name. You should be able to find the book at HorseBooksEtc.com.

Mega-congrats, Juli! Were you expecting it, did you go after it, or was this a surprise?

How's Smitty?

Leah,
A little of all the above.

Smitty is dandy--or so I'm told. He's about a month old now, so I am pestering for new pictures!

Congrats....and what exactly will you be doing on a daily basis for H & R as Editor and Publisher? Can you do it all from afar? Is it the huge increase in responsibility it appears to be?? Wow! Good for you!

Congrats Julie! I know you will do a great job for H & R as you always have.

Smitty is probably in the barn wrapped up in a blanket. Or Mark is too cold to take him out for a pic. The weather up here is just a drag!

On the editor side, I assume responsibility for editorial content in print and online.

On the association publisher side, I work with the ad-sales team to help develop opportunities for advertisers.

I will keep working from home, as I have for about 20 years.

Will you continue with the section you do now?

I enjoy it alot - would hate to see it go, but understand if you don't have time.

Congratulations Juli!
You were holding the reins when I first discovered you (and vice versa) while discussing a humor article back in the 90s. You sat the H&R horse beautifully back then and with all the experience you've tucked into your brain since then, it is a given that you'll ride the pony to a perfect score this time -- and then some. My best wishes go with you to the new post,
Connie in TX

This is great news and I do wish you the best. Your editorials in the early nineties meant a lot to me. I had begun my journey with trail horses, and I remember what you said about looking out the window at a backyard horse. More than one of your articles were so well written I cried over the feelings you wrote about. Horse & Rider published a horse "tale" of mine titled "A Lotta Bull", but now I've come a very long way on my journey and have had my own book published. Basic Training for a Safe Trail Horse with subtitle of Eliminating the Fear Factors was written especially for recreational riders who keep horses at home and want a horse to be a true companion. It shows how I learned to re-educate my older horse (age 12) and to teach my young filly using words and without using bits, spurs, ropes, longe lines, or round pens. The book contains instructions of methods used to communicate with a horse as if you are the alpha mare member of his herd. It is available at Amazon.com or from me, the author, at safetrailhorse@gmail.com
