Off Topic: Elk Tracks!

Our little piece of Idaho sits right along a wildlife corridor that goes from the river canyons south of us to the timbered mountain area to our north.

Some mornings, I look out the kitchen window and see an elk herd.

Other times, all I get to see are the herd's tracks, traced out in a newly planted field.

The elk are definitely heading north now, as I've been seeing them grazing in the evenings, just below the timber line to our north.

Our ranch is at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet. The elk pass through on their exodus from the high(er) country in October, but head back up this time of year. They hang out at this elevation, have their babies usually some time next month, then head even higher to above tree line and away from the tourists. Right now, when we are out riding or hiking, as we reach any open park, there will be a couple of elk happily grazing, and reasonably undisturbed by the horses. It never ceases to amaze me...

Aren't we lucky to be able to look out our windows and see all the beautiful wildlife. Don't think I could stand to look out and see cars and cement.
