Ready for Your Comments: April 09 Horse&Rider

Here's the cover of H&R's latest issue, April 2009.
A couple of new things I'll point out:
* The cover horse, Whispering Incognito, is the first Morgan to grace H&R's cover in at least a generation. No grand scheme for why the long drought and why it finally ended, just kind of how things worked out, over a too-long stretch of time for a lovely breed of horse.
* Julie Goodnight becomes an official member of Team H&R in this issue, with some sound advice on how to handle a horse that won't walk when you take him on a ride outside an arena.
* The formula for calculating a horse's "true" age is revealing. I used it for Tank, and learned that he when passed on last month, he was the equivalent of a 102-year-old man!
OK, your turn to say what you think...(rhymes with pink).

I love the cover shot - probably my favourite so far! The pink and chocolate brown are great together. The horse is beatiful and the articles sound good. I have a 19yr old gelding, so the article on age sounds interesting.
Since a bay is my favorite, of course it gets 2 thumbs up from me!
Just had the pleasure to meet Julie Goodnight at the NE Horse Expo. We only had her for one day & invited her back for next year. Rave reviews!
BTW, you are the only magazine I subscribe to that shows the page #'s on the cover. I LOVE THAT! Sometimes I only have a few minutes to sit down & can quickly go to what I want to read without scanning an table of contents which in most magazines, isn't typically the same title as on teh cover!
Thanks for the feedback on the page numbers, Tammy.
We were just debating the value of that when finalizing May's cover, last week, so it's great to hear something on that topic.
Pink and green are perfect colors for a spring issue. I'm looking forward to reading anything related to spooking and jigging, as those are my number one frustrations in my efforts to get my horses out on the trails.
Lovely cover pic, the pink, green and chocolatey bay are very "spring" and now. (At least where I am, there is TONS of pink and green in the stores)
Every article tease sounds like one that *should* be pertinant to all horse owners/riders. I especially like the articles on age and horsekeeping seeing as my "baby" is 28. And believe it or not she is the one that the jigging article applies to!
Since it was being discussed I'll mention that I also appreciate the page numbers on the cover.
I have a quick question, I seem to remember that at one point H&R mentioned the name/breed of the horse "models" in the articles. Why did that stop? Is it something that may be brought back?

I don't know the answer to this--crediting every horse used as a model in articles has not been been a practice in the time I've been back with H&R, and that's been since summer of 06.
There may have been a concrete reason, and it may be something that just tapered off with time. Stuff like that happens in Magazine Land.
Great cover. I love the bay, he has soft eyes just like my horse. I can not wait to start reading the articles.
I love the cover too, and do like the page numbers as well.
I've missed reading about the horses modeled in the articles as well. That was a nice feature, we give credit to the riders and this is a horse magazine, why not give it to the horses as well. That's where the true credit should be due.
Stunning. That cover could not be any better, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be reading EVERY article behind it. Great Job!!
Great cover, and I love the color combo also. I'm interested in the spooking and jigging articles, how to keep a horse sound, and the true age article.
I like it that you put the page numbers on the cover, too!
yeah! I LUV Morgans and am so glad to see such a magnificant animal gracing the front page of H&R...
I love the subtle touch of pink in the background too.
Great layout.

I'm interested to see that teeth article. I'm always fascinated by that. I'd really like to know for sure how old this wild mare here is.
I can appreciate a good looking horse and bay to boot. Where did that head stall come from? Great to hear that Julie is now on staff.
Love it! Bay/dark brown and pink. Great and eye catching!
I am with Mikey and am interested in the teeth article too.
Not a huge Morgan fan, don't hate them or anything, just not into them so IMHO the cover doesn't appeal to me as much as say last month's cover.
What would be neat though is if there were some info on the breed in the issue. I am never opposed to learning about other breed and find them fascinating to read about.
It's great to see a Morgan on the cover again. They are my current riding horse breed. And I do like the idea of a little more information on the horses and owners used as models. I've known some of them over the years and it is fun to read about them.
LOVE to see a Morgan on your cover. And that is a stunning bay, the tack really sets the picture off. Thanks for such a great magazine, love your articles and thanks again for the photo of the lovely Morgan.

Hope you aren't under water in ND, Michelle!
As a admirer and owner of the Morgan breed, it's great to see such a beautiful animal as your cover shot. Enjoy your magazine and keep up the good work.
Hi, I"d like to comment also on the Clinton Anderson articles. After reading the article on proper equitation from Al Dunning (Who Is AWESOME) You turn the page and there is clinton doing the very things Al just told you NOT to do. Maybe you could let Al critique clinton!! Thank you Vickie
Great Cover! My favorite breed! Please keep the page numbers on the cover. Keep up the good work!

How great to see a Morgan on the cover -- the horse that truly can do anything! (LOL, I am not prejudiced by owning one or anything!)
And I have to agree with the comments on the great color combo -- why shouldn't stallions wear pink when they can look so darn good in it?
I thought the magazine was great, but I always wonder why it seems there are more pages dedicated to advertisements than there are for the material? Either way, nice issue and we enjoyed finding out that our 18 year old gelding is really more like 15 - no wonder he won't act his age!
Love the fact that a Morgan is used on the front cover of this issue. It would be nice if the magazine would do an article on this flexible breed. I own one and I have never had a horse with so much personality and desire to please. I've owned Quarter Horses and a half Arab and neither gave me the thrill my gelding does.
In reference to the gorgeous Morgan Horse on your cover, I believe that his sire is Stonecroft Masquesade, not Stonecrop Masquerade, as listed in your article. Don't worry, I am a terrible typist, too!
