Superbowl Widows of America: Let's Just Go to the Barn!
In the 40-some years since it started, the Superbowl has become a grand annual diversion for much of America.
The parties...the chips and dip...the commercials...the betting pools...the beer and other "recreational beverages"...the excuse to veg out for half a day in front of a TV set.
Great if this is what floats your boat, but if not--I say, let's just go to the barn (or equivalent) and have a different kind of fun.
The horses will appreciate it. And those bulked-up guys, battling for the chance to wear the big ring, will never know you weren't parked in front of the tube to see them do it!

Yeah, I think I'm going to ride at my friend Nita's. I don't need any more excuses to sit in front of the TV.
I'll hang at the barn, but ummm, not your barn right now! Eeeekk! You know it's 78 degrees today here? I'm having a ball doing year end business accounting. yippee!
But I do hope to slip away on a dune buggy for an hour with my girl and explore some desert. I'll be thinking of you!!!
Well, Julie since you are not coming to AZ we will be having our party at the bar which is in the barn. I hate football, but the food is good and my horse's stalls are right next to the bar. Tough life I know. 78 here also yesterday.
Luckily it isn't a big deal for my husband and boys, either. They'll watch the game just because... I'll fix some favorite foods... I asked what they wanted - I got one vote for Pioneer Woman Steak Bites and one vote for Pioneer Woman Sweet Potatoes (catch a theme going here?) and another vote from French Fries. All doable. In the meantime, Ill be at the barn, too.
The only part of the Super Bowl I want to see is the halftime show-The Boss (Bruce Springsteen) is playing!!
It is 65 here in Arkansas today (we are not in the part that got ice) and I have already ridden and cleaned the barn. Will work in the garden yet too-it is getting to that time here! Not not Juli's!
Brushed the horses, cleaned the barn, and rode my horse. It was about 65 today in Mississippi. Tomorrow's high in the 40s and raining. Ride when you can. Juli, when you coming to visit.
Oh, all the comments with warm temps are torture! It was "warm" here in Iowa today, and it still meant coats, hats and gloves! Warm means we don't have to wear our Carharts.
Julie: Love your Horse and Rider articles, column, and blog! I look forward to reading them all!
Carharts?!?
A person after MYhart!
I had a perfect Super Bowl Sunday.
Went barrel racing, double header in the morning and a single in the evening.
Good news I won a little cash at 2 of the 3, got to spend time with my buddies, found an awesome indoor to ride in 10 minutes from where I board AND had the best run I've ever had with this horse.
(sadly the timer malfunctioned on that run, its the 1 I didn't win anything at)
I couldn't go to the barn yesterday (celebrating Dad's 74th birthday - a worthwhile diversion just the same) but I agree!
And as great as Carharts are, you HAVE to try UnderArmour if you are heading to the barn in cold weather.
I am in northern Illinois, and Under Armour ROCKS! Last winter I would wear my UA long johns under my jeans, mockneck, socks and half-zip pullover, and usually only a zip up sweatshirt over it.
If you're just starting out, try one of the hats/beanies and the socks (the only color they had when I bought mine was olive drab but they're in my boots so who cares?). eBay will have the best prices on this stuff.
UA works by compression, so if you can't stand tight clothes, it might not be for you, although they did come out this winter with a regular base layer (not the compression fabric).
My husband is a musky fisherman (the 2 most expensive hobbies in the world - horses and muskies) and we've done tournaments at the end of October on the chain of lakes in N IL when it's 35 degrees with 30 mph winds on open water and while we weren't exactly toasty, we didn't look like Ralphie in his snowsuit in Christmas Story.
Juli, I love your blog, and just got the first issue of my H&R subscription last week!
