2009's First H&R Issue: Comments Welcome!
Here's your sneak peek at the cover of January 2009's issue of Horse&Rider. That's Al Dunning on the cover, enjoying a ride out in the desert surrounding his place in Arizona.
This issue also marks the debut of a new department by Al, called "How's My Riding?" We give Al a photo of a reader on horseback, and he critiques the reader's riding. It's inspired by the article from last year in which Al gave me a riding lesson that was captured on camera.
It's just of several new things added to H&R for 2009. (Note cover lines to that effect.)
Hope you find something within to grab your attention and/or tickle your fancy.

Very cool! I'd like a riding lesson from Al!! Maybe I'll submit :)
Love that grey horse on the cover! Gorgeous!
I liked the idea of having a January cover withOUT snow on it, LOL!
Oh WOW! I am going to renew my subscription today. I keep Al's book on my nightstand and refer to it constantly!I also recommend it to everyone in all disciplines, his tips are great! I am super jazzed about your new column!(can you tell?)Or is it just the coffee kicking in?
Love the graphic on the cover, lots of excitement, movement and energy!
I love the desert!! You know me I can not wait to leave this cold and get down there and ride. Al is a great teacher and this will be a great article. Love your magazine because I always find lots of helpful info even if we don't show any more.
Counting the days to leave this cold weather! LOL
I got my copy in the mail a few days ago! Normally it would be read cover to cover by now but 'tis the season (to be busy as heck!)
I did manage to page through it though and so far I like what I've seen.
And I'll add my vote to the "loved it" list for the cover shot.
Have a Merry Christmas Juli!
Love the cover!
Love the sunshine - haven't got it yet but I can tell you now I will most likely spend a considerable amount of time starring at any sun and pictures of green things inside...
The weather up here is just killing me...
Nice cover, Juli.
The Al Dunning sounds like a nice addition as a regular column.
One thing I would love to see added would be a regular column devoted to gaited horses. Once in a while H&R does do a featured article, but for the most part they seem to be treated as something of novelty, when they have in fact gained much popularity in recent years and make up a goodly segment of the equine population.
As the economy continues to slide downwards, I would foresee a trend towards fewer "specialized" horses, and back towards the "jack of all trades" horse where one animal can serve several purposes. Many of the gaited breeds fit that bill to a T.
"How's My Riding" with pictures is a brilliant idea. I enjoy the Conformation Clinic where you guess the order of best to worst conformation of horses. It should be fun looking at photos of riders and guessing what's wrong with the picture. I can then have my son take pictures of me riding and be better at picking out my own flaws.
I really like this cover picture! I also like the idea of critiquing riding pictures. Looks like a good issue!
Wow, bright clean, I cant wait to see what new thing I can do cheap with my horse!
Overall, I liked the issue. To be nit-picky, though, the horse in the rider photo that Al critiqued is not jogging. It actually appears to be slowly loping, which would make the flared nostrils and the rider's hand position make more sense (low outside hand to check him back and raised inside hand to try to keep the leading shoulder up. The horse could be walking, but it is definitely not jogging in a two-beat diagnol gait.
I've been lucky enough to ride with Al. Can't wait to see what he says :) Besides being very knowledgeable, he has an entertaining way of teaching. These should be good!
