Ridin' The Weather Channel Pony Today

According to plan, some of my North Dakota family members were going to take off today at O-Dark-Thirty, driving to Idaho for a visit. But an explosive blizzard has taken any kind of plan out of the picture.

Native Nodaks know better than to leave safe shelter during one of these killer high-plains whiteouts, so the would-be travelers are on hold. No doubt listening to the wind howl around the corners of the house and snuggling back under the covers. (Still, for me, one of the most evocative sounds in the world.)

It's too early yet for me to go out and feed the horses, so I'm curled up with laptop and SBD (Small Black Dog), catching live reports on the blizzard from The Weather Channel while writing this. It's clear that we won't be seeing the family as soon as we thought, and the whole trip could get nixed.

That's the way it goes, though. A lesson you learn early when growing up in a place that gets fierce winter weather: As long as everybody's safe, count yourself lucky and just wait it out.

Gives me more time to get the barn clean (notice I did not say house) before I can expect to get company!

Well yah - you wouldn't want your barn messy would ya? What would your family think of you with a cluttered dirty barn? LOL!

I can poke fun cause I don't have a barn and I am afraid that because of 10 years of bad influence my barn would look strikingly similar to someone else's barn we both know.

Only I wouldn't have the "starched shirt bomb" look to it after shows. :)

Oh, how I miss those N.D. winters... Idaho get's a bit nasty once in awhile, but nothing like that.

I so DO NOT miss winter like that. I grew up in Elk County, PA, in the Allegheny Mtns. The weather patterns have changed a lot since I lived there, but when I was a kid, it was a lot colder and they got a whole lot more snow than now. Mr. Fry and I are reveling in daily highs in the 70s. We do get snow, but not often, and it's gone before you ever get sick of it.

Sorry to hear your relatives got stuck at home with the "lovely" weather we are having. We lucked out and missed all the snow but the temps sure dropped and the wind is howling. I really hate this time of year. But one thing about a blizzard versus other types of storms - if you use your head and stay inside and don't drive you will be safe. Like I am going out in this cold! LOL

Hope your rellies make it out there. Now, if I could just convince the dogs to go outside!
