The De-Brumby-fication of Tiffany, Continued

Here's Tiffany the day after getting her brumby mane shortened up--and boy, you'd never know it was relatively even-looking when she went to bed last night!

She had shavings down her ears this morning, so I know she must have had some fun rolling in fresh bedding after I went to the house last night.
Kids--you just can't keep 'em from messing themselves up!

I'll say this for Tiffany, she's genetically programmed to grow plenty of hair. At 19 months, she had a mane almost down to her shoulders (at least in the part she hadn't rubbed out during her summer of being turned out). She has enough tail for two horses. Her mother was like that, too.

It almost seemed a shame to cut that mane back, but I finally reached the point where I just had to be able to see what kind of neck and profile it was hiding!

Aww- She's super cute! I love a grey horse! And I love a hair-farmer too! my gelding- not so much in the tail dept, but he can grow a good mane. I keep it roached though- it's way easier and looks clean and neat all of the time. It is the coming thing in the AQHA world too, and remember you heard it here!( ok I've been doing it for two years, and AQHA just 'sanctioned ' it in one of the articles in the Journal! ) Thanks for posting the after picture!

I look at grooming the same way I have come to view house cleaning. Mr. Fry calls it my "15 minutes of clean." I know I can count on mine rolling within 6 paces. Jaz's mane is roached because he rubs no matter the season or what product has been used. His tail is always a mess. Poco has a beautiful tail, but his thick, frizzy mane sticks straight up and seems never to grow.

It's always nice to give them a hair cut and have them look all tidy. She is really pretty - I love greys. It will be intersting to see how her colour changes as she gets older.

I could sure use some of that mane and tail on my poor appy!

She is cute! Love a horse with lots of hair. My Hotrodder has a tail on the ground and her mane is really long. Takes a little care but I love it. Only problem when riding in the desert she caught her tail on a cactus, it got stuck in her tail, she swished her tail, she went one way and I went the other! LOL So, now I either braid it or shorten it a little. At least I hit the sand and not a cactus like another guy did!

I have mane and tail envy.
My mare has teh classic black and white pepper mix, which is most black and brown and yellow. gross.
No matter how much I scrub!
But, I do just love greys. Esp, the grey with dark mane and tail. growl !
She sure is pretty and is going to be such a hottie in the ring!

That uneven mane is exactly why I'm afraid to try trimming or pulling! My horses' manes are left natural other than a bridle path.

Jocelyn: Just get some hair dye and put on your tail and mane. I have done it to several horses and a lot of times you only have to do it once. We used a garbage bag and cut a hole for the mane. Put a thick layer of Vaseline right next to the roots so the dye does not bleed. Did the same with the tail. They look great after you are done! We had one that looked like he had bailing twine in his tail. Did it once and that was it. Also did several of a friends that had gray horses.

Well Juli she looks cute none the less, even or uneven - and less like a brumby!

Phyl, what an interesting solution...would it be legal to show them like that? Would it be altering their markings? Is it like adding a solid colored tail to hide the white more?

Stephanie: I only know about Quarter Horses. It is legal as long as the color matches the color on the papers. You can not for instance make a sorrel tail black. I know a lot of people that also dye the black legs so they are darker. It is pretty easy and make sure you have your camera when you do it.
