Hot Off the Press: November's Horse&Rider

This morning, I'm packing for a flight to Dallas, where the editorial staff of Horse&Rider is meeting to map out plans for 2009. While I'm gone, I'll give you the opportunity to comment on November's issue; here's the cover.

A few insider comments about the issue:

* The cover horse is among the contenders for this year's National Reining Horse Association Futurity. We spied him at a photo shoot last May in Texas, where he's trained by Carol Metcalf. Carol's one of the women who definitely holds her own against the guys in the sport of reining.

* Working with all-around star Charlie Cole, also of Texas, I wrote the article blurbed as "10 Tips for Your Next High-Point Victory." Charlie, who's helped guide more than one horse to the AQHA World Show's Superhorse crown, is an undisputed voice of authority on the subject of winning all-around and high-point titles. If you compete, you should get a lot out of this story.

* The "Rate Your Horse" article covers Linda and Pat Parelli's "Horsenality" system for pinpointing a horse's personality traits. I'm very, very interested in how the differences in human personality affect attitudes and behaviors, and will be curious to know what you think of the November H&R article after you've read it.

I'll check back in for your comments while I'm at the mag meeting. They're enormously helpful to us, so fire away!

You couldn't have picked a better time to travel to my neck of the woods. The weather is absolutely PERFECT. You will need nothing heavier than a sweater or sweatshirt.

Next time you are in Dallas, I'll buy you a margarita! I'd say we could hook up this week, except I'm getting ready for a business trip myself.

Enjoy!

Charlie Cole trained my Quarter Horse, Silk (aka Silk Is In), back in the early 1990's, long before I got her. I am so grateful to him. He did an amazing job, and she is truly my dream horse. Looking forward to reading the article!

I love this photo! It has action, beauty and passion all in one great shot. The articles are exactly the ones I would want to read. I am not showing at a World level( yet) but it is my goal and I get motivated by reading about how someone else did it. ( The same reason I really like the JQURNAL). This one may bring me back to the fold- even in this economy.

First of all this is a gorgeous cover.

Most of the blurbs look interesting enough to get me to at least check out the mag if I were to see it on a newstand (but I have a subscription :) )
I'm particularly interested in reading the "Small barn big ideas" article.

Just wondering, it seems like it takes forever for my copy to reach me. Is this because I live in Canada?
(it doesn't always take a long time, but usually it does)

I like the cover photo, the action shot is absorbing.

I would be turning to the "10 tips" and "groundwork basics articles first."

The rate your horse's personality article leaves me somewhat uninterested just because it's from the Parellis. I used to be a fan of them, and I think the best thing I learned from them was not thinking of "working" your horse but "playing" with your horse. It's a good attitude to have. Other than that, their left brain/right brain horsenality stuff seems too superficial to me, like a lot of their stuff. I don't want to bash them, but I don't think that they have as much to offer as many other trainers out there do and the programs are too pricey for too little. Just my opinion.

I'm wondering what the barn ideas article is about. Looks like it could be real helpful.

Hi! First off, LOVE the cover shot!!!!

Very interested in the barn article...the high-point victory article has my attention, too. The majority of the other articles look interesting too. Not really so much into the Clinton article, but that's just reflective of the stage I'm currently in. Looking forward to reading this issue!

Wow! Great cover! Gorgeous.

This issue seem packed with stuff I would like to read.

Your article with advice from Charlie Cole I can't wait to read.

The spur article and the Clinton Anderson article also look extremely inviting to me. I would have no problem picking up this issue off the news stands if I didn't already subscribe.

I wonder about the Personality Article though - I may just skip it. I am not a Parelli fan at all and don't buy into the whole NH thing. Don't want to turn this in to a bash session either so i will leave it at that. I still might read it just to see if there isn't some useful information that I can gleam from it that doesn't require me to purchase books, video and equipment to get to level 2 so that I can understand what he's saying about level 3.... whoops went off again didn't I?

Anyways everything else looks great!

The cover is gorgeous as usual, I am interested in the small barn article, and in how H&R does an article on the Parellis. I have been a Parelli follower for 2 years, not religeously, but they have given me a lot of tools I hadnt found elsewhere. Horsonality has always reminded me of the swirls and personality that was popular a few years back, they all have something we can use and some things we can toss out. I look forward to my copy in the mail, which I always sit down and read cover to cover asap.

Hi Julie,
This was an especially informative issue for me.....I've never used spurs, but have had at least one horse who probably had never been ridden without them - might have explained a few things! After reading the article, I'd feel more comfortable trying them, just so that a youngster would know what they are before going on to it's next owner. I always enjoy Clinton's practical advice (get to go to a two-day clinic this weekend - yay!), and was iterested to see the ponying article also, as I always found it to be a great tool for the youngsters. Had to wince a couple of times while perusing the magazine though....once when I saw the large BLM ad for mustang adoption (so nice to know our tax dollars are being spent on advertising by the agency that's competing with domestic horse breeders for buyers), and again when I read the part about how Pat Parelli "divines a horse's personality intuitively".....okaaay.... All in all, though, I have to say that I don't think I've ever gotten a H&R issue that didn't have at least one article that gave me new and useful information - kudos!

I always look forward to my Horse and Rider!
The Charlie Cole article was great, and the ponying article was informative, too. I have to say, like other people, I skipped the Parelli article, though. I just cannot get into the NH thing. We need another showmanship article, on currents trends, like pull turns.
