Wow--You Make a Great Mag Sounding Board!

This is an official "thank you" to everyone who's posted comments so far on the October cover/issue of H&R. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and I can tell you that others on the magazine staff read it as well.

A few comments on your comments:

* It's a pleasant surprise to see how many of you read the magazine as well as my blog. To me, that adds a layer of validity to your commentary; you have an investment in what my co-workers and I cook up for you every month. (Not that comments from non-readers aren't welcome, too. A non-customer can tell you things you need to be thinking about just as well as a customer can.)

* Reaction to a cover photo can really tell you where a person's coming from in terms of his/her own horse life. Some people, for instance, really seem to appreciate an image showing a shiny, immaculately groomed horse. Others seem to take it personally that the horse doesn't look as "everyday" as the horses they relate to at home.

(An FYI of interest: The first time I got to choose a cover photo, many a moon ago, I picked an arrestingly composed head shot of an unclipped horse in pasture condition. Whoa--audience reaction, overall, was so emphatically negative that I wasn't sure I'd survive it. For every letter saying "thanks for the slice of reality," I'll bet we got 50 letters saying "what the H--- were you thinking?!?")

* There's obviously strong interest in such subjects as riding through fear issues, and the age of futurity horses. I'll be real curious to see what the magazine gets for reader mail on those two subjects. (Got my first e-mail on the fear article just last night, so I know the issue's now hitting people's mailboxes.)

Once again, thanks for sharing your thoughts and reactions. And if you haven't yet posted comments about the October cover and issue, please feel free to chime in.

Juli- As usual- thanks for your hard work and dedication to your craft. Thanks for letting us
'in'to your world. I've always appreciated the horse world in the fact that our heros are also people like ourselves- Bob Avila can be sitting in the stands next to you at a horse show, Lynn Palm will stop to listen to a problem when she's visiting the expo- Go to any rodeo and have an after beer with Justin or 'Tater'. We are not all Mick Jaeggers, but each horse person is a rock star in their own right.

Hi Juli: I got the magazine in the mail today. I read your article about fear and Bob Avila's article before husband took it away from me. LOL

Your "fear" article was really interesting. When I showed I was always afraid of riding out of the arena. I had back surgery many years ago and still have a bad back so I do not want to get hurt again.

A couple of years ago I started watching Clinton Anderson on TV. I found it interesting and ordered a couple of his DVDs and read his articles in H&R. I have never had so much fun with my horses. I found that now that I know the one rein stop I am not afraid to go riding anyplace.

Last winter I broke the bone in my shoulder. I was leading a horse out and one behind bit her and all hell broke loose. I was on the bottom and of course hit the hard ground. My husband figured I would not ride again. I was back riding with my sling on my arm in just a few weeks. Getting off and on was not easy (much less pretty!)but I was not going to miss my riding time.

Funny how a little one rein stop could boost my confidence like that. I hope you manage to get over your fear. I think it would probably be a lot worse to see someone else hurt like you did.

Unfortunately when we get older we don't bounce like we use to. But I have decided that I am going to enjoy every horse day I have - no matter what. AS my husband always says when we start out "today is a good day to die"! LOL Meaning do what you want and enjoy life no matter what.

Loved the Avila article also. I agree with him that horses need to be started right and I hate to see them started so young. We did show 2 yr old futurity classes but never the yearling lunge line. I think that is even worse.

Thanks for the great magazine.

I've quit reading most horse Mags, but still sometimes pick up H&R.
Must be a reason for that.
Maybe it's you.

Hi, first time posting a comment. I really like the Oct. issue and the cover is inviting. I wish there was more info. on the "fear" article though. I've noticed now that I'm older (50) and got hurt badly on a horse a couple of years ago I too have trouble with fear that I never had when I was younger(and thought I was invincible). Articles that tell how to get past the fear are really appreciated. thanks again and I love your blogs.

I was a subscriber to this magazine for fifteen years!!!

I miss it. I had to cut a few expenses... so it was down to trim hooves and do dewormer, or read about horses.

I'm looking forward to investing in a subscription again. Until then, the blog here is a wonderful discovery. (I always enjoyed your column. I remember reading about Ace's transition from show ring to trail riding buddy!)

I finally got H&R away from my husband. I looked at Clinton Anderson's article and here it is about the one rein stop! Loved it.Don't get me wrong I am not one of the CA fans that drools every time they see him!LOl But he has sure made my horse life a lot more fun. I am so glad H&R has his articles. I keep them in a notebook so I can take them out to the barn.

The other articles were also very interesting. Horses on a budget was good - especially if you show. You did miss Tack Trader though. They have a lot of stuff for sale and a lot of hits on their site. I also liked the training article by J Forsberg Meyer. The Horse Wrecks was really good. My husband and I both could relate to some of those.

Another great magazine! Now when do we get the next one?

I was a subscriber years ago (early 90's) and then not again until a couple years ago when I got another horse after 34 years (I cried the day I called my mom and told her I bought a horse! It was a long time coming!). I remembered your column from back then and am now also enjoying your blog. Am a big Clinton Anderson fan so I am also enjoying his column in H&R. As for the fear thing, at 50+ I take things slower and try to be smarter and more careful in handling my horses - yes, now I have 3 :-)
