Normality Rears Its Boring Head
Now that the blind horse (new name: Keller, after Helen Keller) is safely at Shiloh Horse Rescue, and now that her intrepid transporter, Mikey, is back home in Arizona, there's nothing for me to do except get back on with normal life.
Which for me, largely consists of:
* Working on yet another issue of Horse&Rider. The November issue's last pages go to press today, so the December issue is officially underway. (For us mag-types, the holidays come early; I've already had the Christmas decorations out, for the purpose of taking holiday-themed photos for the issue.)
* Days spent alone in the company of animals (three dogs, three horses.) Once Ed leaves to go to his job in town, I usually don't see any other human-types, except for the FedEx and UPS drivers, and maybe the occasional drive-by Jehovah's Witness. It's really no wonder that I'm used to talking aloud and having no one answer.
* Making lists of all that needs to be done in preparation for another winter. New to the list this year: "Plan mid-winter trip to Arizona." I didn't exit, stage-south, during any part of last year's big whiteout winter, and definitely regretted it. Not making that same mistake twice!

I wish I could be there to help you paint--I felt bad about not slapping a paint brush to Thorson Fence this year. It's something of an annual ritual. But, as it turns out, I have a barn here to paint. Thankfully, though, only two stalls!

Sounds like a perfectly lovely day to me. Writing, editing and then working around the ranch! You lucky girl you!
I think it sounds like a great day too--beats the daylights out of sitting around angsting while waiting to hear if I'm getting the house I put an offer on. But getting to watch Jasper graze from the deck was too good to pass up. :)
Thank you SO much for sharing the story of Mikey and the rescue of the blind mare--what a beautiful story! The pic of the poor thing's hoof before work just made me cringe... :( I'm so relieved she has a good home now!
I think everyone following Keller's story is having the same feeling.
And you know it's time to go to town and talk to real people when you have the urge to pat the UPS man on the shoulder and say "Good boy!" when he brings you an unsquished package.
Hey Julie, I need to paint also but have to remove wallpaper first. It is going to be way too nice this weekend for that!
You should join us at the Gotno Ranch in Florence AZ. We will be there from Jan - March and would love to have you come. We could even round up a horse for you. The riding is awesome and the bar at the back of the barn is just the greatest! No need to go to town. Even have musicians show up on the weekends and they have some little for fun horse shows.
We have been there three years and can not wait to get back there!
