Blind Mare is Now on the Road With Mikey

We're freshly back from our drive to meet Mikey E. at the livestock market and help her get the object of her mission--a blind mare who has a welcoming committee waiting for her at Shiloh Horse Rescue in Nevada--trimmed up and into her trailer.

We arrived before Mikey did, so we were able to visit with Janet L., the auction-yard employee who's been taking care of the mare for the last two weeks. Janet had her safely in a large pen, with another mare there to act as seeing-eye-horse. The blind mare had come to trust Janet enough that she could lead her; above, Janet and her son bring the mare up an alley toward the exit area.

When I'd last talked to Mikey on the phone, she asked us to see if the horse would let her feet be picked up--so she could trim them before starting the return trip south, from Idaho. The mare was hesitant at first, but compliant when she knew what we wanted her to do.

It didn't take long to realize that she'd had lots of handling and training at some point in her life. What you see here is the the longest untrimmed foot I've ever seen.

Meanwhile, the FEARLESS rescue rig, Mikey at the wheel, pulled in to the livestock market. Mikey grabbed her farrier tools, and started in on the first trim job the blind mare had had in a very long time.

I held the mare while Mikey worked on her. When Mikey set the first foot down, the mare almost lost her balance--she was used to flinging the ski-like foot out in front of herself, just to feel the ground. But she stood remarkably still for the rest of her hoof work. In fact, overall, I'd say her manners were impeccable.

Janet told us what she'd found out about the mare's history. She said a young girl had owned her all her life, but had gone on to college and left the mare behind. "Kinda forgot about her," is how Janet put it. Finally, whoever was caring for her got tired of dealing with and feeding her, and hauled her to the livestock auction where I saw her get no-saled.

Mikey (red cap), Janet (orange tank top), and I paused for a quick picture with the mare, now wearing a fly mask (donated by Janet) as eye protection. Wow, that Mikey--not just FEARLESS, but a beauty to boot!

My husband, Ed, and Appaloosa Horse Club CEO Steve Taylor came along to help get the mare into Mikey's trailer. We did use their assistance, mostly just to help her keep balanced and going in the right direction as she felt her way from one kind of surface to the next.

I have to say that I had to work pretty hard not to cry when she finally found her way to the trailer's front and dove in to her hay. There was just something about the moment when I knew she'd been passed into another set of good hands, after Janet's....

Godspeed, you two. And Shiloh, you have a wonderful surprise on the way. This is one sweet, sweet horse--kind of an Appaloosa angel, with Mikey as her wings.

It takes a village...

I'm sitting here in tears reading this story, so grateful that you and Janet and Mikey came to the mare's rescue, and so disappointed that a person who had cared for her all her life could just 'forget about her.'

Thanks for keeping us posted on the journey, Juli.

This is so interesting to be able to follow along with Mikey. It is hard to imagine walking away from a horse you have had so long. But interests change (horses to boys) and maybe the girl does not know what happened to the horse.

Have a great trip and keep us informed. PS Mikey is way to cute to be a farrier!

The next "live" report on Mikey and mare will most likely come via Shiloh. They have a daily blog.

P.S. I have some extra photos of the Mikey pick-up process and will post them on Monday. I'm now on a weak dial-up system (for the weekend), and the files would take forever from here.

By that time, we should hear something from Shiloh. Mikey should get there sometime tomorrow.

Now I know what the phrase "there are angels unaware among you" really means. For some reason, this one horse, among all who are sent to slaughter, touched Juli's heart. She reached out and Janet and Mikey responded. The three of you, and Shiloh, are our "angels unaware." I hope that your actions inspire many others to do whatever kindness they can. I am Mikey's Mom and I am very, very proud of her. She has a great heart. As soon as this trip is over and I can breathe again, I will tell her that I am so proud of her.

***melts***

I always knew Mikey was an angel in disguse, and now Juli T and Janet are too. I am so so so glad these women could come together and get the mare to a home that will love her.

You guys deserve something special for this.

What a relief! I'm glad that mare is going somewhere nice, and her feet got trimmed. She sounds like a sweety, and I do hope there is a horse at Shiloh that gets along with her right away so she can find her way around.

OH no those feet! I recently saw feet like that on several horse and they culd just barely take a step or two. She must have been like that for such a long time.
Thank goodness Mikey was there to trim her hooves right.

Will this horse need more future work done to get the feet back to normal again? Was there any lameness issues caused by the overgrowth, too?

I bet that girl will one day wonder what happened to her dear horse...if she has any conscience. I hope there's some guilt involved, too.

Thank God for people as wonderful as those at Janet's and folks like Julie and dear Mikey.
That horse is having a brand new, happier future created just for her. :)

What a great outcome and uplifting and yet heartbreaking adventure.

I am so glad that the mare is safe for now - hopeful for the rest of her days.

I am not sure I like the "kinda forgot about her" explanation. Horses aren't toys that one outgrows and casts aside - the girl must not have learned what most of us have learned from horse ownership - responsibility.
