Summer Weekends: How Will You Use Yours?
Ah, summer weekends. Their promise/potential is pretty much what keeps me going through the drudgery of winter...you, too? Between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, we get 15 of them this year--and the countdown is underway, with 14 left to use and enjoy as we will.
What'll you do with yours?
I have two blocked out for annual campout trail rides that take place in my neck of the woods. I set another two aside for horse shows. Two more go to family gatherings--one for my side, one for Ed's. One weekend goes to horse-related volunteer work. Two will be gobbled up by travel on behalf of Horse & Rider. I know we'll need to devote at least two of the remaining five weekends to our never-ending rounds of annual painting projects.
Wow--only three left free between now and Labor Day? No wonder summer goes too fast, and winter returns too soon!

YOU NEED TO MOVE TO GEORGIA. I DON'T THINK PEOPLE WERE MEANT TO LIVE AS FAR NORTH OF THE EQUATOR AS WHERE YOU LIVE. THE COLD GETS TO YOU MORE AND MORE AS YOU GET OLDER, AND THERE'S MANY MANY WORRIES ASSOCIATED WITH HORSES AND EXTREME WEATHER. NO KIDDING JULIE, LIFE'S TOO SHORT.
GA FAN
One for fundraising for our barrel racing club.
One prepping for provincial finals.
One at finals.
Several at jackpots (to qualify for finals and "tune up".
A couple at meetings.
One for a work function.
One travelling to see my sis (whenever her baby arrives).
Hopefully getting up to the forest to trail ride. :)
GA Fan,
I'm quite sure I would melt down completely in Georgia-type weather...in summer, anyway. My idea of a perfect summer day is 70 degrees, light cloud cover, and no humidity. Which pretty much describes where I am.
Winter might be a different story. But having never lived in a southern climate, I can only guess. In fact, I've never lived farther south than Fargo, North Dakota.
(You are either laughing, or shaking your head at this point, no doubt!)
Team roping and trail riding if the weather cooperates! Three inches of rain here in Wyoming since Friday, wondering if summer will ever come.
Julie... I don't know about you but as much as we "northeners" grumble about the long winter I KNOW I'd miss the snow. Especially at Christmas!
3 Horse Shows - down from 6 last summer. Got 3 after Labor Day scheduled.
1 Outdoor dinner party
3 Big Camping Trips - seems to be a couple of "lets get the heck out of here!" mini weekend trips a year.
2 Mountain Bike Races
1 Father's Day Weekend Visit
Plans so far anyway.
6 horse show weekends (4 in a row!)
3 weekends of business travel
2 organized trail rides
1 weekend painting trim on my house
That leaves the rest of the weekends painting at the barn!
April :-)
Winter here in Australia so I'm just going to read and dream. =)
If we could keep the weather we're having in Michigan right now for the entire summer I'd be in heaven. It's been sunny and 70 for the entire week, no humidity and crisp cool evenings. I'm with you Juli-I'd be miserable anywhere that has heat and humidity year round! I've even missed having a fire in the fireplace already!
Just having moved, we'll be spending the summer weekends getting used to chores and upkeep of our new little farm. We love it!
Becky,
Congrats on the new farm! You will have a rewarding summer getting it all shipshape to your liking--no doubt! Bet it's lovely there right now...
I spent a year and a half rehabilitating my horse, Cruiser’s bowed tendon. This spring, we were given the go ahead to just ride and have fun this summer, and that is what we are going to do. He is an awesome trail horse. Our trails are right by the barn, so that means trail riding 5 days a week.
I have another horse, Mingo, who will also be ridden, but not as much as he was last year—and he’s happy about it. Cruiser loves to go and Mingo loves to stroll. All is right with the world.

Weekends this summer will be (and already are!) a flurry of home improvement and packing up our house.....hubby is starting veterinary school at U of Minnesota Aug 26, so we gotta get our farmhouse in PA emptied and rented out by then!! Any time leftover will be spent on dad's boat, attempting to relax, and trying to find somewhere on our place to ride....("You can't ride in that field, wheat is growing!" "You can't ride in that field, the hay will get damaged!" "No not that one, it's sorghum!")
Gotta love living amongst farmers who are NOT horse people.....(groan). ;-)
