On H&R Assignment This Week

Popping up a note to let you all know I'll be in Texas all this coming week, doing conducting photo shoots and interviews on behalf of Horse & Rider. So--you'll have to talk amongst yourselves! (Or something.)

My first stop: a shopping visit at a major western store. Then photo shoots with Carol Metcalf, Andrea Simons, and Charlie Cole. All are members of Team H&R, and when you see their articles in the magazine, it's because yours truly and/or other staffers were on location at their training operations.

("Tough job," I'm hearing you say.)

If there's anything you'd like to know about these projects, or about the major talents I'm about to go visit, post here. I'll be back--eventually!

Hi Miss Julie! Love your blog!
Curious. Will you be covering the Extreme Mustang Makeover in TX in Sept?

Mikey,
At this point, I have no plans to cover the EMM in September.

But, it's a long way until September.

Julie,

I got my new H&R this weekend. I have not had a chance to read it cover to cover yet but I always go to the article "Horse we would love to own." How do you pick what horse goes there? My fav so far has been walla walla whiz but, you have picked some fantastic horses and I find myself agreeing with you everytime!

Thanks,
Amy

Amy,
I'm glad you like "We'd Love To Own," because that page was my idea!

How we pick the horses is simple: When we go on location (farms, shows, pro barns, etc.), and see a horse we would love to own--we photograph it, get info and other quotes about it, and publish the results.

I think horse people are always scoping out other people's horses, trying them on for size (so to speak), and imagining what it would be like to own them. Who doesn't love a really cool horse?!

PS. Above comment posted from the Phoenix airport. The alarm clock failed to go off, I woke up with 15 minutes to dress and pack, and I'm still trying to catch my breath from what turned out to be a frantic 0-Dark-30 dash to my outbound plane!

If you don't cover EMM I hope another H&R staffer does, I'd be very interested in hearing about it.
Also, it seems all the "Horses We'd Love to Own" are show horses. While H&R does have a lot of show related articles it seems to have widened its focus. So what about some of the rodeo horses (I LOVE Lindsey Sear's horse Martha!) or special "back yard" horses.
That page was a great idea by the way... one of the first I go to.

CDN--
You may have noticed that H&R doesn't cover any rodeo events but barrel racing. So, we don't come into much contact with rodeo horses.

We have a darling kids' lesson horse coming up soon, though!

Hi Juli,

Went down to Joe's and rode last night - Riley looks REALLY good!! He enjoyed the few minutes of extra pets and loves he got from me. Always spot him walking in the barn cause his face kind of looks like Stretch's face...told him "mom" would be back soon.

The weather is great at home - least it was last night.

Steph,
Thanks for lovin' up on my Riley and letting me know how he is!

Texas has been very stormy, so getting photos has been a real challenge. Hoping for better weather today!

I am now in Gainesville, and my hotel room looks across to Carol Rose Quarter Horses. Saw a hand herding about 20 horses down an "alley" through the middle of the pasture. Going to Carol's is not part of this trip, but the view is a nice bonus

HI, all,
I've wrapped up my photo shoot assignment and am on my way home to Idaho. It'll be a climate shock to go from 90+ degrees today, in Aubrey, Texas, to the low 30s by tonight, back home. But I'll have a little sun-color to show for it!

Some highlights from today were working with Team H&R's Charlie Cole, and getting to sneak a ride on one of his great performers, Show Diva. I also got to meet Paint stallion Zippos Sensation at Simons Show Horses--not to mention Charlie's pet giant tortoises!

Hi Juli---

Love your blog----Would be interested in seeing some race coverage, especially since we have '2 down, Big Brown' and his Triple Crown bid. He has some interesting connections, including a gallup girl that started him and has been his sole rider in the mornings. Thanks for keeping us up to date on all the current industry news.

Anne,
Thanks for the comment.

As I wrote in a previous blog post, after the televised track breakdown of Pine Island, I can no longer bring myself to follow the sport of racing. I deliberately found something else to do during this year's Derby--and am glad I did. Just hearing about Eight Belles was bad enough.
