My Ride With a Pro: Al Dunning of Team H&R

June's issue of Horse & Rider includes an article about my opportunity to take a riding lesson from Team H&R's Al Dunning, at his ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona. One of our blog-buddies inquired about what it was like to ride with Al, so I'll share a few things.

As an instructor, Al is PRESENT. You get his full attention, and he mentally rides with you, and coaches you, at every stride. He puts a lot of emphasis on the technical aspects of your riding skills--in particular, body position and balance. He can spot little things in an instant, like the fact that I tend to ride with a few more pounds of weight in my left stirrup than in my right, a result of my being stronger on the left side than the right. (I was not aware of this until Al zeroed in on it.)

Al assumes that you are there to RIDE, and to get better at it, not to talk, socialize, or theorize about riding. He does the talking (instructing, that is), you do the riding. He's not afraid to yell at you if your mind starts to drift, but he's not abusive about it--and he's generous with praise when you've earned it.

During my lesson, I rode a horse of Al's that I had never been on or around before. I was a tad tentative about that at first, but pretty soon I was so occupied by keeping up with Al's running-commentary style of instruction that I forgot all about the fact that I was on a horse that was new to me. Once I got home, I found that the improvements I got from Al translated very well to my own horse, Riley. I'm sure he would say "thanks, Al!" if he could!

The June issue is great! Loved the article on hair sworls and your article with Al Dunning. Plan to try to incorporate some of that advice in my riding. Just have to somehow remember to do it! lol

Very cool. Do you think Al could send a lovely, older, quiet well-trained horse up to Canada? lol

I'm going to go check out the June issue now - it's always a great read.

Sure hope everyone's mail comes thru soon! In a perfect world, everyone's issue would arrive the same day--but as is, we're probably lucky they all arrive it the same month!

:)

Oh - I love the horse in this month's "we'd love to own"! That type of personality and attitude is just what I need! *sigh*

Julie - you've probably been asked before - but what goes in to the "we'd love to own" column - do you travel around to get the photo/write-up, or is the info emailed to you by the horse owner?

You have the coolest job! :-)

Laura,
Those of us who travel to do on-location photo shoots for Horse & Rider keep an eye out for horses we would love to own, and that's how they end up in the magazine. The photos have to be shot to a specific format--a 2/3 page vertical--which the average reader would not realize. So while we would not automatically turn down a submission from a reader, 999 times out of 1,000, reader submissions don't include photography we can use. Most people don't seem to realize their cameras can shoot vertical images as well as horizontal ones!
Glad you liked June's horse. I would love one like that, too!

Laura... wrote a blog entry I'd like your opinion on if you have time to check it out (sorry Hawk didn't work out) :(

Julie, the newest "Horse We'd Love to Own" is great! I'm assuming he's the lesson horse you had mentioned would be featured in a future issue. It is a really sweet pic of him and his rider too.

Hi Juli!
I LOVED the article about your lesson with Al. When I started reading it, I thought about Rule #1 of horses; leave your ego at the gate.

I don't think I would have the courage to 1) climb on a strange horse for a lesson while, 2) having a lesson with a new-to-me trainer and 3) (this is the biggie) have my thoughts, the trainers comments and PHOTOS published in one of the most read magazines! However, I am so glad that you did! I gained so much reading that article and identified some of the same issues that I have when riding.

Thank you for letting H&R readers "peek behind the curtain" yet again to see what makes great horses and riders. You've still got it!
