All the Horses You've Ever Had
OK, here's a fun exercise for anyone looking for a work diversion (and those of you who surf blogs while at work know who you are!):
Name all the horses you've ever had. I don't believe I've ever committed my own list to print, so here goes.
JULI'S HORSES
Buttermilk (first pony, at age 7). Lad. Whiskey Man. Tony. Fox. Fanny. Bandit. Kojak. Pawnee. Rhett. Speed Limit. Lefty. Masterson. Robin. Brando. Buddy. Ace. Rodney. Luke. Sonny. Jackson. Fargo. Magic. Presley. Cowboy. Reddy. Friday. Flash. Teddy. Sister. Beau. Rebel. JJ. Tank. Trouble. Riley. Gussie. Starla. Carson. Nelson. Chanel. Tiffany.
Did I miss anybody?
A number of these were horses I acquired with intent to resell (I have quite the large extended family of horses living with later owners), and a few were horses I raised. One or two were given to me. The purchased ones ranged in price from $100 to $9,000--the latter distinction belonging to Ace, when I bought him the second time.
Your turn!

Ok, Not near as many as you but I had a really long break while raising family and I live in town. Bucky Rum(Buck), Pine(OH) Dude(he was) then long stretch...... On Time(my 26 yr old Morgan), Remington(sold, rescued TB)Dancer(ADD QH) and Trumbie (Daughters horse but He is in my heart.) I have cared for others horses but not actually owned them. Sugar, a very, very fast paint gelding. My cousin's horse. I took care of him off and on for several years. Fancy, A Morgan mare we kept for a friend for 5 months or so. Broke my Dancers splint bone with a kick first day here. That was an expensive mare!
I know from Luke on, I don't think you didn't miss anyone. :-)
For me: Sheba, Nifty, Rocky, Skip*, Tiny*, Dan, Goldie*, Hawk*, Saturn, Presley, Beau.
The horses with asterisks were full-care leases, not true ownership. Pretty close to ownership for the experience, though.
ALF
OH! You did miss one--CODY! :-)
ALF
Mines a short list. I got my first horse when I was 40 (I'm 59 now).
Chicorra, Spencer, Ginger, Sparks, Bart
Yikes! How could I have forgotten Cody? His picture is right here by my desk.
Buck, Prince Chico Vaughn, Dakota Miss Jabber (who owns my heart), Cordovan (husband horse!) and Amarrah. Buck & Prince are from my youth. Dakota Miss Jabber is my 25 year old awesoem trail mare!
first pony Dino, unbroke and a stallion, boy did he teach me a few things besides how to ride! I begged every birthday and Christmas for a pony and I got a handful, He lived to be 32. Then came Lady and Duke. In adult hood Bea, Moochie, Bubba, Susie, Jac, Opie, and Pinto man.
I only really purchased Bea. Opie is Bea's colt by Jac who is now a gelding. Jac was an anniversay present. I got Bubba as a two week old orphan, he lost his mama in the round up, he is a mustang. Suzie was given to me as well as the Pinto man, and the ex gave me Moochie because he got tired of being thrown. LOL that horse always gave me 110% and I brought home more paychecks and stuff with him. All are registerd and well bred cept my Bubba, unless you wanna call a BLM freeze mark and title registration?
Pinto man is the only paint in my herd. He was a neighbors horse that I was helping him train. He had some health issues and liquidated his whole herd. He showed up with the papers and gave me the horse. I didn't want him to go to slaugher he is to nice and has loads of potiential, plus he's a looker, 50/50 black and white tob...but he looks so outta place everytime I look out the window and see his patterned butt, I think he is trying to blend in though...how does one keep the white parts white and not yellow?
The thing is everyone knows I'm a sucker for a hard luck story, and I am good to my herd, blankets, sheets, baths, grooming, riding, a barn, apple waffers, regular trimming and de worming shots etc....so I am constantly offered "free" horses. If I had the means to support them all, I'm sure I'd have 6 or 8 more out there! whew....
First horse, Rocky, then Joe, Skip, Dinah, Angela, Tyler and Fox.
One of the above was my first big time show horse at AQHA shows, another was a high point winner at many open shows. All were great trail horses including that "big" time show horse.....who'd rather be on the trail instead of loping in the pen.
Hi Juli.
I was an H&R subscriber many years ago and was glad to see that you're still writing for them! I remember reading each month about your wonderful gelding Ace, and the trials of moving & a new marriage to a non-horsey-guy. I see, from this blog, that you've owned many horses since Ace, but wondered what became of him and the rest of your "world" between then & now (just trying to fill in the blanks, lol).
Cindy
Oops, I didn't answer the question about horses.
My first horse, a 1971 ApHC mare named Finale's Fawn (by Handprints Little Red Finale) that I got for my 13th birthday in 1973. Yep, she was just an unbroke 2 yr old. My non-horsey-parents (bless 'em) finally gave in to my begging for a horse & found her for me. Thank God she was such a sweetheart, because I braided binders twine & tied them to either side of her halter, dragged her over to a fence, slid up on her bareback & kicked like a mad-devil until she walked off. Sheesh, the antics of a kid!! She was my best friend & we showed 4-H through 1979 when I had to sell her to afford a car. I ran into her at a local open show in '94 where the woman who owned her since the early 80's was showing her at 23 years old. She lived to be 30.
My next horse was Sky Tracer, a 1981 APHA gelding (by Sky Bug Bingo) that I bought as a weanling in '81. I haltered him as a weaner & yearling, broke & showed him as a 2 yr old at APHA & PtHA shows. Finances were still hard, and I sold him just as he turned 3 in January 1984. I happened across an ad in a local paper that alarmed me in 1987 and found it was him...long neglected, fat, broken hooves, very sad. I bought him back & gave him a forever home. Bug was with me through it all including the non-horsey-husband who came in '91. Unfortunately, he suffered from a very sudden & inexplainable case of Lamanitis in both front feet in the summer of 2003. After 4 months of extensive treatment, I had to euthanize him in October 2003. He was buried on our property & memorialized by three 15' Norway Spruces around his grave.
The non-horsey husband left the following year in 2004, just after I bought two weanling APHA fillys named Isn't She Ironic and HBF Pick Me First the summer of '04 (by HBF Iron Man & First In Command), (the divorce was not horse-related). They're 3 yr olds now. Unfortunately, I can't afford to haul them to shows since my divorce, but they're the prettiest darned trail horses you've ever seen, LOL, and I hope this will be their forever home.
Hi, Cindy,
Ace passed away of a heart attack, age 24, in September 2004. He is buried at our ranch in Idaho, where we've lived for 11 years. Most of my horses since then have been short-termers, purchased for resale purposes. I now have a large extended family of nice horses owned by other people, and very much enjoy keeping up with their progess and successes. Ed loves living and working on the ranch, but now spends more time riding his tractor than a horse.
Thanks for checking in with the blog!
--Juli
