Some people are still learning of the death of Blue Hors Matine; how can it be possible that the death of yet another superstar--perhaps the superstar--of international dressage could be in the news today?
The brilliant 16-year-old Trakehner stallion Gribaldi has died of what is believed to be a heart rupture just five days after a tribute in his honor by the Dutch Warmblood breeding society (KWPN).
Anky Van Grunsven on her website writes (translated from Dutch by her site), "Co-owner Joop van Uytert is heart broken by the emotional and financial loss of the stallion. Anky is with her thoughts with Joop and the whole I.P.S team."
On Monday, Eurodressage.com reported that Gribaldi was ordained as the "preferent" sire by the KWPN (Dutch sport horse) society at the 2010 KWPN Stallion Licensing in Den Bosch, The Netherlands.

Gribaldi competed at Grand Prix under Edward Gal, who said on his web site today, "With great pain and sadness in our hearts, we said goodbye to Gribaldi today. A ruptured aorta proved fatal for him. His veterinarian was unable to save him. We can't believe that his happened to you. You'll be in our hearts forever. Rest peacefully, dear Gribaldi....”
Reports from Europe of how the horse died are unclear, although a heart malfunction or injury to the heart's vascular system are common to the reports. Translation can be difficult and details are usually not disclosed as they might be in the USA.

How very sad, most especially for all those that knew and loved him. What a truly beautiful horse, an amazing spirit, that I hope remains behind, at least a little, in those he sired.
Well said. I would like to know how many horses he has sired and when he began his stud career. I wonder if there is a stockpile of his semen...
Very tragic - but I don't see that translation should be a problem. The horse's owner said the following (translated from http://www.horses.nl/dressuur/nieuws/14112/van-uytert-geen-woorden-voor-overlijden-gribaldi):
"It all started on Friday. He seemed to have symptoms of colic, and we decided to take him to the horse clinic in the German town of
Telgte. There, they found that the stallion had an aneurysm of the aorta...... In the clinic, they gave [him]... medication to calm him and slow his heart rate.
This was pretty successful, on Saturday he was quite stable, but his heart rate remained a bit high. He came through the second night well, but his heart rate still remained high. At a quarter past seven on Sunday morning, he seemed to be doing ok, but five minutes later he was found dead in his stall."
The owner further said that there are stocks of frozen semen, but that no decision will be made on how this is to be divided, until the shock of his loss has been absorbed.
What a sad loss! He was gorgeous!!
