Humane Society of the US Compiles State-by-State Regulations and Resources for Horse Euthanasia, Carcass Disposal
When it comes to burying a horse, not all states are created equal. The same adage applies if you are looking for a rendering plant or a low-cost euthanasia program.
But how would the average horse owner ever know?
Enter the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), which has compiled what looks to be a valuable tool for veterinarians, rescue workers, and owners or holders of unwanted horses who are looking for an alternative to sending a horse to slaughter but don't know what their choices are.
Hopefully, states will add services and resources as awareness grows, and also correct or add to their listings, so this resource will develop and grow.
Click here to access the list, and please forward this post to anyone you think might need this information.
Thanks to the Fugly Horse of the Day Blog for bringing this new resource to the horse world's attention.

Did anyone actually read this in a literal, practical, geographically, or common sense frame of mind?
Seriously, this is useful practical infromation to the "average" horse owner how?
In my area I found out there is no rendering facility, landfills can not take animal carcasses, the two horses I did have burned and buried two years ago were extremely illegal.
HSUS, fugly and the anti-slaughter movement, thanks again for nothing
Anonymous, don't blame Fugly or HSUS because the area where you live is not helpful in providing resources for horse owners. Look to your state, county and town to improve the situation. Become proactive and work to improve the situation for other horseowners and for your next horse. The information in the resource guide will certainly help owners in the areas where resources exist and make owners ask why their areas aren't doing more to address the needs of horse owners. That's the whole point!
Fran,
Owners need to take additional steps. Call the service providers to check that they are still operating, the costs, and options available. The HSUS list was already out-of-date for my area. Also try calling your local County Extension office for information.
Yes, EPM Horse, that is good advice. I am sorry that the list let you down but I guess the old saying must be true: good lists are made over time, with the input of many!
I know that a year ago I wouldn't have even known where to begin to look for this kind of information. Just the awareness that has developed of late is a big help for horses.
We have to start somewhere! I will get all these comments to the HSUS.
i find it very interesting that HSUS provides a list of rendering companies but does not also include the disclaimer that many rendering companies will not take an animal carcass that has been chemically euthanizied.
