Curiouser and Curiouser: Horse Slaughter to Resume in Illinois in Spite of Governor's Signature on Ban

The manipulation of the US legal system continues in the ongoing attempts of foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses to operate outside the law. Both Illinois and Texas, where the last slaughterhouses operate, recently passed or upheld in court existing laws that prohibit horse slaughter for human consumption of horse meat. Yet the pro-slaughter forces continue to fight in court. In Illinois, slaughter at the DeKalb plant will resume while lawyers prepare to argue the constitutionality of the new law.

The Chicago Tribune is doing a good job of covering this issue.

We are outraged over this. We pass laws and a foreign company that doesn't pay taxes, sends their profits overseas, owes the sanitary district in DeKalb $100k in pollution fines, employs illegals, is allowed to challenge OUR laws, in OUR courts and waste my hard earned tax dollars and valuable court time. Americans are overwhelmingly against slaughter. We pass laws to end this barbaric, unwanted industry but obviously, these kill houses are above the law.

Yes, I agree with the previous poster's line of thought: where is Obamu? Here's a chance for him to be a hero.

I also agree with the poster, but I think there are probably some "state problems" that are much, much bigger on the senators' agendas than horse slaughter (and there are also many horse people and groups who aren't anti-slaughter, such as the AAEP, AQHA, etc). If I lived in IL, I would look to Dekalb's representative in that area (more localized) rather than Obama and Durbin.

You are correct, Kate but what most people don't know is that organizations like the AQHA are pro because they are notorious for over breeding. The AVA is pro but the majority of the vet membership is not. They have formed their own organization and are speaking out loudly against slaughter. We did the local thing and had a law enacted and you see where that got us. We have to pass the federal ban and stop the transport. Without that, they can set up shop in another state where it is still legal.
